    Next Generation MINI Hatch Previewed Ahead Of 2023 Launch


    „MINI is giving us an early peek at it’s next generation electric hatch as well as launching a new brand strategy simply known as BIG LOVE. But it’s the new MINI we’re all here for and what MINI is saying about it. In short there’s a lot to see in the photos below and a few key details that the brand is letting slip. And this is just the start. So sit back, grab your favorite beverage and read on.

    A few weeks ago we detailed what we believed the next generation MINI models would look like and when we’d see them. Now we have some official answers that define details of the new direction for the brand. Starting in 2023, MINI will be releasing a new generation of cars and crossovers with a focus on all electrification. Internal combustion (ICE) is sticking around for another ten years (as is the manual transmission) but the focus for MINI is on electrification across the line-up. This will start with an all new electric MINI hatch made in China and be immediately followed by an all electric Countryman. The details are where things get interesting.

    „So richtig mini scheint am kommenden Countryman nichts mehr zu sein. Zumindest, was die Ausmaße betrifft. Unsere Erlkönigjäger haben jetzt erstmals die dritte Generation des Crossover abgeschossen und, naja, sie sieht schon richtig groß aus.

    Der Grund ist eigentlich ganz simpel: Der nächste Countryman wird quasi der Zwilling des nächsten BMW X1. Das Duo wird auch gemeinsam in Leipzig gefertigt. Es ist das erste Werk, das einen BMW und einen Mini baut.


    Aktuell wird der Countryman in den Niederlanden bei VDL Nedcar zusammengebaut. Die BMW Group wird die Produktion nun allerdings nach Hause holen, der funky Crossover trägt künftig also das Label "Made in Germany".


    Frühen Berichten zufolge wird das neue Auto mindestens 20 Zentimeter länger ausfallen. Damit käme es dann auf um die 4,50 Meter.


    Wir erkennen am noch stark abgeklebten Prototypen eine Auspuffanlage, Mini hat allerdings bereits verkündet, dass es auch eine vollelektrische Variante geben wird. Das macht Sinn, schließlich wird auch BMW eine Null-Emissionen-Version seines kommenden Einstiegs-SUVs anbieten. Diese dürfte auf den Namen iX1 hören.

    Das neue Auto basiert auf einer Evolution der UKL-Frontantriebsplattform, BMW-intern auch als FAAR bekannt. Sie wurde für den Einsatz von Verbrennern, Plug-in-Hybriden und reinen Elektroantrieben entworfen.


    Auf lange Sicht könnte Mini sogar ein noch größeres Modell oberhalb des Countryman auf den Markt bringen. In einem Gespräch mit dem englischen Magazin Autocar Anfang 2020 machte Chefdesigner Oliver Heilmer bereits Andeutungen bezüglich eines größeren Fahrzeugs: "Der Countryman funktioniert größentechnisch ziemlich gut, aber in anderen Märkten [wie] China und den USA sind die Erwartungen anders. Sie könnten sich vorstellen, etwas Größeres zu haben. Kurz gesagt, es gibt keine Limitierung für uns. Aber es muss sich anfühlen und bleiben wie ein Mini, nur nicht zwangsläufig bei der Größe." For one the UKL chassis that underpins the current F56 is still relatively modern and was designed in a very modular way. Second there’s the enormous cost associated with developing (in parallel) the all electric MINI hatch designed on a completely separate platform. But this won’t be a facelift. Revised engines, an all exterior with a shorter front overhang and an entirely new interior with much larger infotainment screens are coming.     4. The Countryman (G60) As we detailed last week, the all new Countryman will be based on the new FAAR BMW platform. The successor to the UKL2, the FAAR is designed from the ground-up to accommodate internal combustion, hybrid and all electric power. The versatility of the platform is key as MINI (and BMW) will likely need to pivot to electrification quickly based on market and legislative pressures. For the Countryman this will result is a slightly larger car but one with aluminum and other weight savings measures designed into it. Of course that will come in handy as there will be power plants ranging from mild-hybrids to plugins to all electric. (…) 5. The Electric Crossover The other end of the spectrum will be the all electric crossover co-developed with GWM and built in China. Of all the new variants this is the one we know least about. However it’s assumed it will be based on the same platform as the all electric hatch and thus a small four door crossover positioned under the Countryman.     Other Rumored Next Generation MINIs Oliver Heilmer, Head of MINI Design, has gone on record by saying that there would be a maximum of five new MINI models in the fourth generation MINIs. However as you can see there’s no Clubman listed above nor is there a reference to the Urbanaut. And when Helimer said five was he counting both hatches as two and one? We know that the Clubman, in its current form won’t continue. Despite it being the best four door MINI current makes, the market us quickly shrinking for small wagons. We also know that MINI is exploring other variants like the Urbanaut and rumors have pointed to even larger crossovers in the future. At this time we believe nothing has been decided in those categories and MINI is moving forward with the five above.

    Massive Leap In Technology & Infotainment

    Here’s where things get really interesting. In the BMW version we’ll see the all-new BMW Operating System 8 debut. Note this is not called iDrive because the iDrive controller is gone in this application. We’d expect MINI to follow suit. In our minds it’s a step backwards given the data that points to a multi-function controller being safer to use while driving. And having tested the new BMW OS8 recently we can also say things have gotten much more complex in both functionality and usability.

    Yet MINI has a history of going their own way in terms of infotainment so we expect an in-car experience that feels more intuitive and much more MINI. It’s unclear if MINI will carry over the two large screens seen above.


    The Next Generation MINI Hatch Timeline

    We believe the next generation internal combustion hatch and separate electric model should both debut sometime in late 2023. What models will be available at launch is a mystery as is the JCW sub-brand product strategy. It’s expected MINI will offer both petrol and electric JCW models but that launch might be staggered.

Wie der Autobauer am Freitag bei der Bekanntgabe seiner Quartalszahlen in München mitteilte, konnte der Konzern von Januar bis März seine weltweiten Auslieferungen auf 636.606 Fahrzeuge steigern. Das ist ein Plus von über 33 Prozent gegenüber dem Vorjahreszeitraum und zugleich eine neue Bestmarke.


    Maßgeblich Anteil an diesem Erfolg hatte auch die Nachfrage nach den elektrifizierten Fahrzeugen (inklusive Plug-in-Hybride) Im ersten Quartal setzte BMW von ihnen so viele ab, wie nie zuvor. Insgesamt konnte der Autobauer 70.207 E-Fahrzeuge an Kunden übergeben. Das ist ein Zuwachs von fast 129 Prozent. Darunter befanden sich mit dem BMW iX3, dem BMW i3 und dem Mini Cooper SE drei reine Elektroautos. Sie kommen damit im Vergleich zum Vorjahreszeitraum auf einen Zuwachs von über 119 Prozent. Im Laufes des Jahres wird das Angebot an reinen E-Autos durch den BMW iX und den BMW i4 ergänzt. BMW-Chef Oliver Zipse konnte sich bei der Vorlage der Quartalszahlen über einen Gewinnsprung freuen. So erzielten die Münchner im Vergleich zum durch die Corona-Pandemie bedingten schwachen Vorjahresquartal unterm Strich einen Gewinn von 2,8 Milliarden Euro und einen Umsatz von 26,78 Millillarden (+15,2 Prozent) erzielt.

    Bis 2025 soll der Absatz elektrischer Modelle um durchschnittlich mehr als 50 Prozent pro Jahr gesteigert werden. Die Münchner peilen bis dahin einen Absatz von insgesamt rund zwei Millionen vollelektrischen Fahrzeugen an."

    "Mit dem Cooper SE und dem Plug-in-Hybrid des Countryman hat Mini zuletzt gezeigt, wo der Weg hingehen soll. Für zehn Prozent der Verkäufe zeichnen alleine diese beiden Modelle inzwischen verantwortlich. Da ist es nur logisch, dass die Briten ab 2030 komplett komplett auf Strom setzen werden. Ab 2025 soll das letzte neue Modell mit Verbrennungsmotor vorgestellt werden. Was das mit diesen Erlkönigbildern zu tun hat? Nun, eine ganze Menge. Sie sehen hier nämlich zum ersten Mal die nächste Generation des Mini Dreitürers. Des Klassikers im Modellprogramm, sozusagen. Und der dürfte deutlich elektrischer werden als bisher, aber noch nicht gänzlich auf Benziner (und Diesel?) verzichten."

    "Der hier gezeigte Prototyp ist die EV-Version, unschwer zu erkennen am "Electric Test Vehicle"-Aufkleber an der Flanke. Obwohl man zum Design des Autos aufgrund der starken Tarnung noch nicht wirklich viel sagen kann, wirkt es auf den ersten Blick nicht viel anders als beim aktuellen Modell. Das überrascht ein wenig, sagte doch Mini-Chef Bernd Körber zuletzt in einem Interview, dass man, was das Aussehen betrifft, "den größten Schritt der letzten 20 Jahre" machen werde. Sehr interessant ist immerhin der Vergleich mit dem jetzigen Mini Cooper SE, der bei den Tests im skandinavischen Schnee ebenfalls zugegen war. Wie Sie auf dem Bild unter diesem Absatz sehen können, wirkt die neue Generation kompakter und gestraffter als ihr Vorgänger. Das sollte die Fans glücklich stimmen, steckte doch gerade die aktuelle dritte Generation viel Kritik für ihre aus dem Ruder gelaufenen Ausmaße ein. Außerdem wandern die Außenspiegel wieder von der Tür unter die A-Säule.


    Größere Änderungen könnten wir im Interieur sehen. Die Erlkönigbilder zeigen leider nicht den gesamten Innenraum, aber einen Abschnitt des Armaturenbretts erkennt man schon. Auf selbigem scheint in großer, gebogener Screen zu sitzen, wie man das von aktuellen BMW-Modellen kennt. Das wäre eine dramatische Abkehr vom bekannten, schon immer etwas schrulligen Mini-Interieur-Design mit seinen vielen Rundinstrumenten. Wann genau der neue Mini erscheint, ist noch nicht ganz klar. Es wird davon ausgegangen, dass er nicht vor 2023 beim Händler steht, aber er könnte durchaus schon 2022 vorgestellt werden. Neben einem (...)".
